ABOUT HIM
Nicolas Maureau works series after series : Victimes Martyrs Héros, Noli Me Tangere, Scènes de Genre, Tableaux de Chasse, Mystiques.
The paintings of a same series respond to each other, functioning like the lexical field of a theme. The narration that the titles suggest is secondary, they would rather operate as cultural hints than as a perusal assistance. A flat tint fills the background, it occults all decoration and contours the bodies, the subjects are thus placed in a common space and focus the attention on them. The figures, the postures and the clothes are then brought out, as many constituting elements of a gender identity.
In Tableaux de chasse he invokes the mythological and biblical hunters, which is an occasion for him to confront the human form, omnipresent in his paintings, to the diversity of the animal forms. There he represents our relation with the other living beings, our bodies, and our animality. He evokes the vision that we have elaborated of our place in the world and in nature through time by reusing the myths.
